I think your LARP partner was kinda brilliant. And I like the way you put it: expect that players will use anything they know - or at least they might. And if they want to RP that they don't know something, cool. I think in a culture of serious RPing, people will do that more than in a culture that's more competitive and goal oriented.

I couldn't agree more RE "in a culture of serious RPGing". I'm sure folks have played games that vary in terms of style - but I've always been a fan of "serious fun". It sounds counter-intuitive I suppose, but emotion follows from intellectual play and visa-versa so the fusion of the two is a great union.
